Title: Edward VI and Jane Grey
Materials: oil on canvas
Size: 81cm x 95.5 cm
Auction Date: 20.03.24 – Flanders Auctions – lot no: 467
Notes:
A painting depicting Edward VI and Jane Grey reading together, signed by the artist in the bottom left, and dated to 1860. Probably inspired by the widely publicised Victorian myth that both Edward and Jane were educated together. Jane was in fact under the tuition of John Aylmer and Edward was educated by John Cheke. Though it is possible that they both may have spent time with each other, unfortunately, no documentary evidence has survived to suggest that they had a strong personal relationship. We do know from Edwards own accounts that Jane did attend some of the court events which took place during his short reign. The image of Jane appears to be loosely based on the Van da Passe engraving.
